And the part that breaks my heart the most is that self hatred hinders and distorts our ability to love God and love others!
It may sound selfish at first glance, self love, but when the disciples asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was He said:
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” -Matthew 22:37-40
I am not talking about being obsessed with ourselves, that's gross and ignorant and just dumb! But self hatred is not humility! Agreeing with God about who you are is imperative to changing the world!
And I believe receiving God's love is the first step!
"We love because He (God) first loved us." - 1 John 4:19
In a recent workshop called "The Love that Heals" a beautiful girl came to my book table and purchased a book. I love to spend time with the Lord before I go to an event asking Him for an encouraging word for the person who will receive each book. As this particular girl opened her book to the word in the back she started to cry. Not one tear but rather a lot of tears all at once. I asked her what it said. She told us how when she was at an exercise class the day before her instructor told the girls to think of something they loved about themselves. This beautiful girl said she thought about it all day and couldn’t come up with one thing. Finally a day later she was talking to her sister who reminded her that she was funny and the girl said “yes I would say that is what I love about myself that I am funny.”
Less than an hour later she was at my book table opening the book to the back page and turned it around to show us that it read “God loves that you are funny." She couldn’t believe it and honestly neither could I.
So let's get you connected to Love Himself, the Lord Almighty, Jesus Christ who is the One True God. So you can hear from Him just how He sees you!
